This is the second in a series of blog posts dealing with issues raised by my book Love Sex and the Midlife Woman.
You have probably heard this as a song title sung, or rather recited by Sophie Tucker. It contains some profound words of reassurance for those of us who have reached that age.
But Life Begins at Forty is not just a song but also a book published in the 1920s when life expectancy was recognised to be rising and people could expect to live a long time beyond 40.
The New Midlife Woman does not emerge just at the age of 40. It may happen a few years earlier or later.
After going through the usual trials and tribulations of love, marriage and child rearing, she gradually emerges as a different person. What makes life so different is that you have choices, if you chose to take them.
The New Midlife Woman in her ‘prime’ knows her values and knows what she wants. She is fierce and fearless in her determination to get it. However she does not arrive at that position overnight. It requires ruthless self-questioning and honest answers.
Only from that position of self-knowledge, confidence and pride can she get the relationship and love she needs as a platform from which to do the wonderful things that a New Midlife Woman is capable of.
In my view modern Feminism holds many women back from getting that relationship. It can create conflict and confusion about how she should behave in the areas of Love, Sex and Gender.
My book is an attempt to bring insight, understanding and clarity into these areas.
However becoming a New Midlife Woman is still a choice. Many women can and do choose to stay in the old familiar tramlines and drift into comfortable and safe middle age. That is their right if that is what they want.
If you consider you are already a New Midlife Woman, or would like to be, then I sincerely hope this book will help you.
The book is nearly ready to go for formatting, which is the first step of the publication process. Once I have a finalised manuscript, I can start releasing extracts in these blog posts so you will be ahead of the game.
